Established in 1986 by a group of committed individuals known as the founder members, Bangladesh Medical College is the first non-government medical college in Bangladesh. Their vision aimed to provide affordable yet quality medical education, research, and services to the people of Bangladesh. The college and its hospital are overseen by the Bangladesh Medical Studies and Research Institute (BMSRI), a non-political and non-profit organization formed in 1984. Affiliated with the University of Dhaka Bangladesh, Bangladesh Medical College attracts numerous Indian students eager to pursue an MBBS degree in Bangladesh.

Since its establishment in 1986, Bangladesh Medical College has received recognition from the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council. Additionally, BMC Bangladesh has been listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools by the World Health Organization since 1995. This recognition enables graduates of the college to be acknowledged globally. BMC graduates are eligible for limited registration with the General Medical Council of the United Kingdom and can also take the United States Medical License Examinations (USMLE).
